DSEK Surgery (Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty)

What is DSEK?

DSEK is an advanced type of partial-thickness corneal transplant used to treat conditions such as Fuchs’ dystrophy and corneal swelling. In this procedure, only the damaged innermost layer of the cornea (the endothelium) is removed and replaced with healthy donor tissue. This minimally invasive approach leads to faster recovery, fewer risks, and more stable vision compared to traditional full-thickness transplants.

How to Prepare for DSEK Surgery

  • Stop wearing contact lenses 1–2 weeks before surgery, or as directed by your doctor.

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight before surgery (unless otherwise instructed).

  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home — you will not be allowed to drive.

  • Bring a current list of your medications and continue taking them unless instructed otherwise.

  • After surgery, you may be asked to lie flat for several hours to help the graft adhere properly.

  • You will be given detailed post-op instructions and eye drops to support healing.

Pterygium Surgery

What is Pterygium Surgery?

A pterygium is a benign growth of tissue on the white part of the eye that may extend onto the cornea, sometimes causing discomfort, redness, or vision changes. Pterygium surgery involves removing the growth and placing a conjunctival graft to help prevent recurrence. This procedure improves the health, appearance, and comfort of the eye.

How to Prepare for Pterygium Surgery

  • Discontinue contact lens use 1–2 weeks before surgery.

  • Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery, unless otherwise directed.

  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

  • On the day of surgery, avoid wearing eye makeup, face creams, or perfume.

  • After surgery, you’ll be prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops and may be asked to wear an eye shield for protection.
